Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 tbsp butter, softened
- 1/3 cup water (adjust as needed)
- 6 oz mozzarella cheese, cut into sticks (about 3 inches long)
- 2 cups neutral oil (canola or vegetable oil)
Instructions
- Prepare the Dough: Mix 2 cups of flour, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, and 1 tablespoon of butter in a bowl. Add water slowly until you get a smooth dough. Let it rest for 30 minutes.
- Prepare the Filling: Pick your favorite cheese, like mozzarella. Grate enough cheese for about 1 tablespoon per tequeno.
- Shape the Tequenos: Roll out the dough into thin circles. Put a tablespoon of cheese in the center, fold it over, and seal the edges tightly.
- Fry the Tequenos: Heat oil in a deep pan to 350°F (175°C). Fry the tequenos in batches until they’re golden brown, about 3 to 4 minutes on each side.
- Drain and Serve: Take the tequenos out of the oil and drain on paper towels. Enjoy them warm!
Notes
- Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days. Reheat in the oven or air fryer for best results.
- Gluten-free flour works well for a gluten-free version. Adjust water quantity for dough consistency.
- For vegan tequeños, use plant-based cheese and vegan butter.
