Bosco Sticks are a tasty and simple way to add a new twist to a favorite snack. They will transport you back to your days in the school cafeteria when the food was genuinely tasty! Homemade Bosco sticks are even better than the store-bought version, allowing you to customize flavors and make them fresh at home.
Cheese enthusiasts will adore the unusual flavor of Bosco Sticks, which is made with mozzarella cheese, butter, parmesan cheese, and pizza dough. You can't obtain this great taste in the frozen food aisle (at least not like you used to!). With this Bosco sticks recipe, you can recreate the magic with ease, using everyday ingredients you likely already have in your kitchen.
One of my favorite aspects of this dish is how easy it is to customize. The Italian ingredients give these mozzarella sticks a typical breadstick flavor; however, you may replace a number of spices to change up the flavor of your snack. Want a little heat? Top your Bosco cheese sticks with red pepper flakes. For a strong and delicious garlic butter, use freshly minced garlic.
Why Homemade Bosco Sticks Are Better
Making homemade Bosco sticks allows you to control every aspect of the recipe, from the quality of ingredients to the flavors you want to enhance. The combination of fresh mozzarella cheese and golden pizza dough creates a cheesy, gooey center with a crispy outer layer. Unlike the store-bought frozen versions, which can lack freshness, these are best enjoyed right out of the oven, with every bite oozing with melted cheese.
Experiment with different cheeses, like cheddar or pepper jack, for a twist on the traditional Bosco cheese sticks. You can also make them healthier by using whole wheat dough or stuffing them with veggies like spinach or jalapeños. This versatility is what makes the Bosco sticks recipe stand out.
Bosco Sticks
For 8 Servings
Author: Chris
Total time: 30 mins
Ingredients
- 1 pound pizza dough.
- 8 mozzarella string cheese sticks.
- 4 Tablespoons of salted butter, melted.
- 2 Tablespoons grated parmesan cheese.
- Marinara sauce, for dipping.
Steps
- Preheat the oven to 425° F.
- Roll out each pound of pizza dough into a broad rectangle on a floured board, creating two sheets of dough (enough to create 12 breadsticks).
- Arrange the cheese sticks on one piece of dough, keeping them slightly apart.
- Place the second piece of dough on top and firmly push down to seal around each cheese stick.
- Use a pizza cutter to cut around each filled breadstick. The pizza cutter will help close the edges, but press down slightly to ensure that it is sealed and the cheese does not flow out when baking.
- Place the breadsticks on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for 12-13 minutes.
- In a separate bowl, combine the butter, parsley, parmesan, salt, garlic powder, and black pepper while the dish bakes. Set aside.
- Remove the breadsticks and top with the garlic and herb butter.
Notes
- This dish is based on the Bosco sticks that used to be served in school cafeterias.
- Make sure to thoroughly seal the edges. A little mozzarella may still escape, but that's fine.
- I kept them basic; after some study, I settled with how the original Bosco sticks appear, with a dusting of parmesan on the outside.
- For a unique flavor, combine onion powder, garlic powder, and Italian spice with the parmesan cheese.
