Mint cacao frosty smoothie

mint chocolate smoothieOk, this smoothie was created just as an excuse to curb my sweet craving for chocolate. It’s not for breakfast (unless you want it to be for breakfast), but it’s one hell of an afternoon lifesaver when my sweet tooth demands some attention. So I made it a smoothie that tastes like dessert and I managed to fool it.

This smoothie is rich and super creamy from the frozen banana, which also sweetens it, and is slightly spiced with a bit of cinnamon. It tastes a bit like a decadent smoothie, but it’s really just a healthy treat. After all it’s made with nut milk, a couple of dates, banana, raw cacao and chia seeds – some of the best stars of the entire raw cuisine are lined up in this recipe.

chocolate smoothie01You can have this chocolate smoothie flavored just with cinnamon, dates and vanilla, but I love to add fresh mint to it. Sometimes I add the mint leaves and whiz them up in the blender with the rest of the ingredients and other times I simply mix them in, whole, with a spoon, after my smoothie is made so I can munch on them in between chocolaty gulps. However you chose to do it, I reckon mint is a perfect pairing for chocolate.

Prep time:
Total time:
Serves: 1-2
  • 1 cup almond milk (or other nut milk)*
  • 2-3 Medjool dates (or 5-6 regular dry dates)
  • 1 peeled and cubed frozen banana
  • 2 TBSP raw cacao powder
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon
  • pinch of vanilla (either from the pod or pure extract)
  • 1 TBSP chia seeds
  • few fresh mint leaves (I used fresh Moroccan mint)
  1. Add all ingredients to blender and whiz away to happy-chocolate-land.
If you don’t have any nut milk in the house, add 1/3 cup almonds to the blender with 1 cup water. Blitz until you make milk and then strain it. If you don’t have a nut milk bag, a simple fine strainer will do. Then return the strained milk to the blender and keep the pulp – you can make raw truffles or use it in baking or with your morning breakfast.
